Dartmouth is located on the eastern shore of Halifax Harbour and is nicknamed City of Lakes because of the twenty-three lakes within the city. Due to its proximity to Halifax, Dartmouth has a single-tiered regional government (Halifax Regional Municipality) which is comprised of Dartmouth, Halifax and Bedford. There are about 90,000 people in Dartmouth which also includes the small community of Cole Harbour. Dartmouth has a humid continental climate and they can experience severe stormy winters and warm summers. Average summer daytime high temperatures are generally 21°C and in the winter daytime highs average 1°C.
The chain of lakes within city boundaries forms part of the Shubenacadie Canal. Lake Banook attracts many visitors due to the recreation opportunities and has attractive vistas. Dartmouth has a unique Main Street in which there is a strong sense of community, many shops and services, restaurants and it even has a mascot. This city is known as a nature-lover’s paradise because they have countless opportunities for hiking, biking, and boating. Dartmouth’s waterfront is a great place to visit and unwind. There are many historical buildings and museums those who enjoy history. There is a theatre, a science centre, and there are two recreation centres.
