Enjoy the Magic of the Season at Toronto's Distillery District Christmas Market

This holiday season Toronto’s Historic Distillery District will hold its 7th annual Christmas Market. The Market celebrates the romance and magic of a traditional Christmas in true Dickens fashion, with all the heritage and charm of the original Christmas markets in Germany.

The market will showcase hundreds of unique and local handcrafted products from vendors like Artisan Christmas Ornaments, Christmas on the Beach, The Gingerbread House, Good Grieves Shortbread, Oktoberfest Sausage, Maple Leaf Fudge, Petite Thuet, Polar Piece, Stickling’s Bakery, Stocking Stuffers, The Nutty Bavarian, Winterbourne Alpaca, and Wooden Wonders.

One of the highlights each year is the lighting of the Markets 16.5-metre tree. More than 18,000 lights illuminate the Christmas tree at the launch of the annual holiday festival.

More than 350 free performances are planned for the main stage, including award-winning singers, brass bands, cultural dancers, and carolers. This year’s schedule includes themed entertainment each day:

Traditional Tuesdays – bluegrass folk, roots, traditional

World Wednesdays – world music, dance and cultural performances

Classical Thursdays – seasonal opera, oratorio and cross-over classical performances

Friday Night Jazz – holiday jazz

Pop/Variety Saturdays – emerging artists (afternoon) and featured artists (evening) performing pop, rock, folk, jazz, and more

Ensemble Sundays – instrumental ensembles (afternoon), vocal ensembles and choirs (evenings)

Plus, catch daily Santa’s elves sing-along every Tuesday to Friday at 5 p.m. and weekends at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and roaming carolers each day.

Crowds are large on weekends and there are typically long lineups to get in. This prompted organizers to start charging and admission fee on weekends. Their hope is that it will encourage more people to visit during the week when admission is free.

The good news is that some of the proceeds will go toward charities the market supports, including the Daily Bread Food Bank, Plan Canada and the Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund. The rest will be reinvested in the market.

This year’s Market runs from Friday, November 18 through Thursday, December 22. Admission is free from Tuesday to Friday; $6.00 admission on weekends; closed on Mondays.
