Air Canada’s in-flight publication, enRoute Magazine, just released the people’s choice nominees for their Canadian Best New Restaurant 2016 award, as chosen by a panel of food and hospitality industry leaders. Nominations could be made for eateries that opened between approximately June 2015 and June 2016.
Among the 35 contenders from across the country are two notables from Ottawa: Datsun and Fairouz; demonstrating that Ottawa’s food scene is alive and garnering both national and international attention.

Datsun is brought to you by chef-owner Matthew Carmichael, and chef de cuisine Jordan Holley, both veteran of some of Ottawa’s top kitchens, including the popular taco join El Camino. At Datsun, expect Asian plates like pork belly steamed bun, spicy chicken wings, seafood congee, pork and chive dumplings, and seared beef tataki. Critics say the food quality and attention to detail is high.

Fairouz is a Middle East inspired upscale casual restaurant opened by Dr. Hussain Rahal and Tony Garcia in a heritage mansion in Ottawa’s Somerset Village. Dishes like labneh sesame crusted falafel, fil fil kebab, tuna maslouka and lamb tartar are made with house grown herbs and micro-greens. The pita is also made fresh to order.
