North 53 Diversifies Edmonton's Dining Strip
North 53 joined Edmonton’s 124th Street dining strip in 2014. The owner and head chef hype it as a celebration of Canada’s diversity, which means that dishes are influenced by team’s backgrounds rather than a regionally-inspired menu.
Snacks and small plates are meant to be enjoyed with friends and colleagues après work with a cocktail in hand. Head chef Filly, as he is known, has created a playful menu that includes popcorn chicken, a crunchy pickled vegetable salad, shrimp chorizo, pork cabbage rolls, and a rutabaga and oxtail tart. For those who want a proper meal, there is a whole chicken and a steak dinner on the menu. Desserts are kept simple with an assortment of sorbet, ice cream, roasted pear and apple tart.
Bar snacks and desserts are served late night on Fridays and Saturdays until 2 a.m. Indulge in fried chicken, chicharron or chicken liver mousse on rye paired with a delicious cocktail.
The bar menu features 15 creative cocktails divided into three categories ‒ freshman, sophmore and graduate. The descriptions alone leave the mouth watering for a taste. If one were to attempt completing their studies in one night, one might start with the Razzle Basil, a herbal-infused gin concoction to calm the nerves. From there, the Witch’s Fizz seems like the most appropriate choice. Sticking with the gin and herbal theme, but kicking the flavor up a notch with notes of lemon and honey. Cap the night with Verte Chocolat because you can’t go wrong with boozy hot chocolate with toasted marshmallow meringue.
If fancy cocktails aren’t your thing, there are also 10 beers on the menu from Alberta, B.C., and California, as well as three champagnes, one sparkling wine, eight whites, one rosé, 11 reds, and 3 non-grape wines representing new and old worlds.
