Devonian Gardens: Calgary’s Indoor Park
The Devonian Gardens is Calgary’s only indoor public park. Located on the top floor of the Core Shopping Centre, the 10,000 metre-square (2.5 acre), sky-light enclosed urban oasis, contains over 550 tropical palm trees from 18 species, 10,000 shrubs, 1.5 million pounds of soil, ponds, piazzas, a living wall, an indoor playground, statues, artworks, and water features with koi fish.
The Park first opened in 1977, as a state-of-the-art in downtown Calgary. However, more than 30 years later a much needed renovation to the property was undertaken. Devonian Gardens was shut down for four years while the $37 million dollar renovation was completed on the Park and Shopping Centre. Improvements to the space include a larger circulation space in the mall below and the installation of a 3-block long, continuous skylight above.
The downtown attraction is an important part of Calgary’s urban landscape that attracts thousands of visitors each year. In addition to providing a tropical escape for city residents and visitors, Devonian Gardens has meeting rooms and event spaces that can be used for birthday parties, weddings, and corporate events. The City of Calgary runs educational and drop-in programs in the Park throughout the year.
Devonian Gardens is wheelchair accessible, has ample seating throughout, and public and family washroom facilities. A full service restaurant is also planned for the near future.
The Core Shopping Centre is a four-storey retail complex in the downtown core of Calgary, Alberta. It consists of TD Square, the Holt Renfrew building, and the former Calgary Eaton Centre. It is home to 160 retailers and is the busiest shopping centre in the City of Calgary.
