Helping Displaced Fort McMurray Residents Feel at Home Away from Home

Being uprooted from by an unexpected catastrophe, like wildfire or flooding is not only emotionally stressful, and we understand the process to make a home livable again can be quite lengthy, while finding families homes for extended periods can be complicated.

The warm and generous people of Lac la Biche and Edmonton opened reception centres to house the tens of thousands of residents of Fort McMurray evacuated from their homes, as an interim solution. In the long term, due to the massive scale of the disaster, many Fort McMurray residents could end up in a hotel room for months on end; living out of one room with their entire family. But, this doesn’t need to be the case.

There is a cost-reduced alternative to living in a hotel that is more comfortable and can be covered through insurance. Temporary residence providers like Premiere Suites offer furnished housings solutions, from studios to three bedroom townhomes. At the end of the day, it’s the little things like enjoying a home cooked meal or having friends over that can play an important role in helping people who have been through traumatic loss to better cope.

Nationally, Premiere Suites has experience managing people and neighborhoods through a range of catastrophic events and natural disasters, having implemented crisis plans through floods and ice storms. Our team is trained to quickly and efficiently respond to any emergency. Working directly with insurance adjusters and policy holders as needed, providing guidance through the entire process and coordinating all the details of the relocation from arrival to departure. We cut out the middle man saving precious time that is critically important to insurance carriers and their policy holders curing a crisis.

Premiere Suites currently has over 250 suites in Edmonton and Calgary, and eight properties in Fort McMurray, several of which were occupied at the time of the evacuation. Our Alberta team activated our disaster emergency response protocol to ensure the safe evacuation of our guests and personnel.

In order to accommodate the increasing demand for emergency housing, we are working swiftly to add to our inventory of available units. Any families and individuals that cannot be relocated immediately, will be waitlisted until such time that units become vacant or additional units are added. For people looking for accommodations outside of Alberta, Premiere Suites has over 1,500 suites in 38 cities across Canada.

We look forward to re-opening our operations in Fort McMurray, and hope to welcome residents and visitors returning to the community, as efforts to rebuild begin.
